Sefes and Oestrimni

Serpent worship

The Sefes and Oestrimni were mythical peoples, who, according to some classical writers, inhabited the north-western peninsula. In the hillfort, a stone with a snake-shaped engraving has been preserved, shrouded in myths and legends that form a part of Galician folklore and tell of these mythical peoples’ ritual practices. Sacrifices may have taken place on this stone in honour of the serpent, a symbol of fertility and protector of the hillfort’s inhabitants.
