Myths and legends of Castro de Toiriz (Silleda)
If you see a moura…
Like all Galician castros, this one is not exempt from legends of mouros and other mythical beings that form a part of the history of the area. The upper part of the castro or “croa” (acropolis) was given the name Eira dos Mouros.
Legend has it that in this place a beautiful woman used to appear every night, with a delightful tent, made out of leaves. One day, a man was passing by when the woman asked him,
‘What would you like from the tent?’
‘A comb’, he replied.
‘The spell has doubled‘, she answered.
The following day, she appeared once more, but in the form of a serpent. She asked the man once more,
‘What would you like?’
‘Some scissors’, he replied.
‘The spell has doubled‘, she answered.
On the third day, she appeared in the form of a woman. She asked a man passing by,
‘What would you like from the tent?’
He replied that he was in love with the woman with the tent. Before saying these truths, everything in the place turned to gold.
